TASK 3, SUMMARY ABOUT CALL
CALL
(Computer Assist Language Learning)
CALL
(Computer-Assisted Learning Language) is an approach to language teaching and
learning in which computer technology is used as an aid to the presentation,
reinforcement and assessment of material to be learned, usually including a
substantial interactive element. CALL is not a method. It is a tool that helps
teachers to facilitate language learning process. CALL can be used to reinforce
what has been learned in the classrooms. It can also be used as remedial to
help learners with limited language proficiency.
The
design of CALL is used to help the teacher completing the learning, because
CALL have 2 important features, they are bidirectional (interactive) learning
and individualized learning. So CALL is not be used to replace the face to face
language instruction.
Maybe
using the internet to teach language in schools in Indonesia is still not
realistic for now because there is a lack of funding from government and
education institution itself, but maybe it can be realized in the future.
Actually in the learning with using CALL can give some advantages for students
and teachers, they are 1) CALL is good
for motivating students to study English, 2) Students can get different types
of input using a computer, 3) Learning can be individualized using computers, 4)
CALL can overcome barriers of time and place, 5) Teachers can get materials
from commercial companies. But there is also a disadvantage where the teachers
have obstacles in doing implementation in their class especially in Indonesia,
like there is no enough instrument in teaching, a school has to have a computer
for a student and of course there must be internet there.
However,
most of the problems that appear in the literature on CALL have more to do with
teacher expectations and apprehensions about what computers can do for the
language learner and teacher. Teachers and administrators tend to either think
computers are worthless or even harmful, or can do far more than they are
really capable of. Reluctance on part of teachers can come from lack of
understanding and even fear of technology. Often CALL is not implemented unless
it is required even if training is offered to teachers
For adoption of
learning technologies in schools, of course Teachers should be computer
literate and trained continuously and they have to get more experiences in

TASK 2 - ICT in Language Learning
SUMMARY
A report from Japan showed that ICT can
improve students’ motivation in learning, especially in terms of “Knowledge-Comprehension”,
“Practical skill” and “Presentation skill”. Although ICT can give some
advantages for students in education, ICT also can give some disadvantages in
education . The advantages of ICT in education are: by seeing the pictures,
students can remember the material longer, for the teacher, they could measure
how far students understand the material, and they could make learning more
interesting for students and could improve students attendance and
concentration. On the other side, the disadvantages of ICT in education are : many
teachers that haven’t known what ICT is, and buying of ICT equipment is too
expensive.
Nowadays,
technology will develop rapidly and newer, even it is cheaper and stronger will
appear to make the whole of the world more sophisticated. Many efforts that
people do to make the education more sophisticated, like TV and Radio or mobile
phone are used in some school to make learning more interesting and
sophisticated. New internet technology will exist to provide connectivity to
remoter areas, and software that students could get freely from internet to
support education.
In
some school, the teachers have shown to their students some application or
software that they can use in online teaching. It can make their students to be
more creative and make learning more interesting. Some software that the
teachers can use are wallwisher and prezi. Wallwisher looks like facebook, it
can be used for sharing some URL, link web, pictures, audio, video or making
note. Teachers can ask their students to post their assignment on wallwisher,
and the teachers can assess their assignment or give feedback. Prezi, it can be
used for presentation. It looks like power point, but Prezi shows the
presentation more interesting. In power point, the form of presentation is some
slides, but in Prezi, the form of presentation is like a map. The teachers can
zoom out or zoom in.
Planning
Commission said that ICT tools must be used for significantly improving the
educational services and for streamlining the admission process. ICT must be
used to improve learning service. ICT can be used to increase experience in
learning and can improve the quality of research and collaboration by providing
knowledge and information widely because education is a key for growth and
prosperity of a country.
Because of its interactive and dynamic nature, ICT has the potential to
meet the needs of individual students by providing opportunities to direct
their learning and to pursue information, or complete tasks, in ways which meet
their own interests and needs. (Computer based technologies in English KLA,
1997, p6). If the teacher use ICT in learning, it could make students more
creative because they can use multimedia to make the material in learning more
interesting. Using ICT in English could improve students skill in speaking,
listening, reading and writing. Students could get all of the material that
they need from internet in some form like picture, animation, audio or video.

TASK 1 ICT in Language Learning
SUMMARY
Nowdays, internet is like a
primary thing. Everything that we will do, sometimes wi need internet. In
education, a teacher will ask his/her students to use internet for the learning
process. They can use internet to browse the material they can use to add their
knowledge. Thay can use ebook to get many books from internet easily. For other
people, they can use internet like for selling or buying something, usually we
call it online-shop. They also can use internet for online baking, online
office suites, shopping cart software, teleconferencing, electronic ticket,
etc. Using internet is very easy now, we can use our mobile or smartphone for
accessing internet every time and every where we want. It’s an evidence that
how useful internet is.
If we use internet, we usually
find a word or some words ( usually the color of those are blue) that if we
click it, it will refer to another web page that have the similar context with
them. We can call it as hypertext. From
hypertext, we can freely get many things (text) from one web page to another,
go forward or back.
There is also hypermedia.
Hypermedia is like hypertext, but hypermedia is combination between hypertext
and multimedia, like images or sounds or animations. So hypermedia not only
contain links but also some forms of sounds, images, animation or videos.
Actually, Internet can give us
some advantages and disadvantages. It depends on how we use internet well or
not. For the advantages are we can access everythat that we want, we can know
what happen in other countries by browsing the news through internet, and we
can do some innovation from it. But at the same time, there are some
disadavantages like virus threat that can destroy our pc or mobile phone that
we use to browse internet, and some worrying for the teachers if their students
used internet for the materials not connected with the learning process.
